This morning we started by talking through the brief and adapting our action plans. The brief talks about what needs to be included in our 7 outcome sections and a rough breakdown of what should happen during the weeks leading up to hand in. We also filled in our action plans with future and past information. I then progressed on to making pages in my book about buffalo and my mock up of a kilt outfit. I still need to add text to the pages along with the sketches. I have a vision but I sometimes find it hard to explain this to other people or put it writing so I’m a little worried about this part of the process.

We took two days to work at home and I was looking at the Buffalo book I have at home and I was inspired. I found a previous sketch I had a made and decided to work from that. I made a draft of the kilt with some tartan I had at home and I pieced it together to get an idea of what my end piece might look like. I tried it with different jackets and tops to get a sense of styling as well.

I went to an exhibition on my birthday called Beyond the streets. It was about the impact of graffiti and street art. It was centred around punk and the birth of hip hop and how it has impacted fashion and film heavily. I found some pieces that showed ghillie suits and the colour in them made me want to add more colour to my look.

I came back to working on my jacket and sewing on more tabs. I was able to complete all the panels apart from the two hood panels. I figured out an easier way to apply the tabs which allowed me to increase my work rate slightly however it is still a very tricky process. I’m overall happy with how it’s looking so far but worried about getting things finished.

I carried on with the construction of my jacket and started to get more of an idea of what my end result might look like. I worked on the hood for my jacket and I found it hard to attach the zip down the middle and hide the seams which is an essential of part of my vision. I got there in the end through trial and error but I’m slightly annoyed I wasn’t able to find a reversible zip.

Today I worked on the pattern for my matching trousers to my jacket. I believe the pattern is decent but I want to make a toile to double check the fit especially the pant width. I really want to make sure they are baggy and that the placement of the zips is correct. I’ve yet to design the waistband but I’m going to do that after I’ve created my toile and I have the measurements. I need to continue working on my bomber jacket so I’m hoping the toile doesn’t take too long.

I’ve come back from my half term and I’ve been doing research into sports figures particularly Muhammed Ali. My project is linked to sports and military and he was connected to both through his boxing but also by protesting the Vietnam war. I’m trying to think of ways to capture him through elements of my work. I’m thinking about using images or boxing gloves and shorts.

I’m feeling very stressed about my show and trying to get things done on time. I’ve been able to finish my jacket today but I’m feeling there’s not enough time to get my trousers done. The pattern is made and all the pieces have been cut out and I’ve been sewing all my triangles on for my ghillie design and it’s very time consuming.

Today was show day at the business design centre Islington. I arrive late because I was adding the finishing touches to my trousers after a whole night up sewing. Even after being up all night I wasn’t able to finish them and I haven’t completed my waistband so I’m hoping safety pins can do the job. After arriving I helped set up the dressing room for where me and my classmates will be prepping but after seeing where we were supposed to be I thought we should move because it wasn’t convenient for designers or the models. Luckily we were able to move closer to the runway. (I wish this had been the hardest part of the day). After setting up in the new room I had both my models cancel. Nathan my first model had trouble getting in and was considering leaving but after hours of me convincing him I managed to get him to stay and I was able to replace my second model. After that I still managed to do my dress rehearsal on time and then I had some small edits to do on my clothes. I had to hand sew binding onto the zips and cut the veil to go over look two. When it came to the show I was able to be the closing look which excited me and things went well. Although things weren’t finished to perfection I was able to hide any faults and make it look good on the runway which I was pleased about.

I’ve been shopping for fabrics trying to find pinstripe for my shorts n’ trousers. I went to the fabric warehouse near my house and I finally found what I needed after a lot of searching. This particular pinstripe had a perfect spacing, roughly a cm between each line. I also loved that it was jersey fabric which made it more athleisure rather than suiting.

Today I lost my trousers. I was travelling with so many bags from school and sadly the one that I lost on the bus was my work in progress trousers. Luckily I still have most of the pattern and the fabric store is close to my house. I am gutted though and feeling stressed.

23/05/2023

Recreating the trousers took much longer than I thought but I am further along then where I was when I lost them. So overall I am pleased but worried for time. The setback has really cost me valuable sewing hours and magazine planning.

25/05/2023

I’ve been speaking with my teachers and they recommend that I make a tight mesh top for time to replicate the army face painting. I went out and bought the fabric today and cut it but whilst painting I noticed that no matter which instrument I use i couldn’t replicate the stroke of the face painting. I also think it will be much more time consuming than using the army face paint directly on the models torso on the day of shooting. Therefor I’m not going to continue.

I am really trying to get as much work done as possible because I am running out of time. I’ve had to take apart the reversible trousers from the runway show to complete them properly so they shoot well. I’ve had to push back my shoot and I’ve rescheduled from yesterday to Tuesday. The trousers still wont be fully reversible as I had intended because of the front zips but it won’t be too noticeable. The idea and intention of my vision is still in tact and I’m happy I’ve been able to get this far.

My shoot was yesterday and things went very well. As I thought the body painting was swift and only took about 45 minutes. I was able to shoot at my godfathers photography studio and my friend Nathan was kind enough to model. I used the lights and cameras that they had in the studio and my mum and I both took the pictures. I started with the painted look as there was a shower there so Nathan could wash off the face paint before the second look. It was really cool seeing my vision come together and I think the photos came out the way I had planned them to.

14/06/2023

Today I went to the printers to get mum zine printed as they said they had a walk in service. Unlucky for me they had recently sold the company and are in the midst of a rebuild so the staff they had weren’t able to help me. I’m now rethinking how I’m going to print my zine but I’m going to talk to a past teacher that I think has experience with Indesign.

16/06/2023

Yesterday was the day of the final show. I was able to hand in my clothes the way I wanted them to on the 14th and hang them properly. On show day I spent most of my time battling with the printers and computers in school to get my zine finished. It was a very stressful day. 30 minutes before we started my zine was printed and as I went to put it down on the plinth I realised it had been freshly painted… so I had to wait which was frustrated but it did give me some time to add finishing touches to my presentation.
